Alan’s World 🌍 Week 11/07/22

I decided to try out Audible for the first time this week with Star Wars Shadows of the Sith. I’ve been seeing people rave about this book a lot lately and it’s touted as bridging the gap between the original trilogy and the sequels, so I thought it would be worth a read. I’ve been thinking about trying Audible for a while now too, so considering I got the book free as part of the trial, it’s a win win 😁

It’s a little weird listening to a gruff sounding American guy act out the parts of a woman with an English accent, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it. And, I’m hoping that I actually end up enjoying audio books as it might be a way for me to experience more fiction stories – I seem to struggle with either time or concentration to read fiction books, while I can smash a non-fiction book about UX or web design in a few days…

I’ve been saying for a while now that Disney / Lucasfilm will likely create a whole bunch of additional stories around the sequel trilogy to retcon and expand on those films. It’s what they did for the prequels with The Clone Wars show, which definitely makes those films better than they were on their own. Glad to see they’re starting to build on that and hopefully it’ll make the sequel films feel more like a part of the whole.

At work, I’ll be working on that internal app UI and design system project for a long time to come yet. I’m really enjoying the work. It’s been an excellent opportunity to use my React skills more than ever and I’m loving solving the UI challenges. I can’t overstate how complex this app, and therefore the UI, are. I’m certainly practicing my JavaScript skills!

I’ve been feeling a bit low towards the end of this week. Losing my father in law recently has brought back thoughts of losing my dad at a relatively young age. I guess thoughts of my own mortality have been playing on my mind a bit, especially with regards to how the kids would take it. Hopefully I’ll get out of this funk soon. I’m not great at being able to talk about this stuff (although better than I used to be), I tend to internalise a lot.

I’ve been using Headspace at work, mainly for the focus music, which really helps me concentrate when coding. I think I need to make more of an effort to do some of the meditations again which should help snap me out of this. A couple of years ago, I started doing the Headspace meditations daily and it really did help me put situations into perspective. I used to get stuck replaying situations in my head over and over, which I don’t struggle with very often anymore thanks to those meditations.

We had a pretty packed weekend again. I bought some new trainers to try and make it a bit more comfortable for me to exercise by lowering the impact on my knees. Went out for a couple of walks to get some “me” time and to put them to the test. Nice and comfy and forgot how much I like just going for a walk.

My nieces came over on Saturday evening which always gets our kids over excited 🤣

We had the usual family visits on Sunday and then to keep the kids entertained during the heatwave, we went to a local independent craft bar that serves desserts with my sister and nieces. It was a nice way to keep everyone sane while keeping out of the sun!

Drew a couple more Disney Princess pictures with my eldest daughter. Not my best work and usually rushed, but I love drawing with her and seeing her passion developing for it.

I’ve been writing on my phone in the notes app more this week, because as much as I like WordPress, it’s really difficult to use the editor on a phone for writing. It’s a pretty buggy experience if you just want to start writing a post. You can, however, paste into the editor on a phone without issue. Once the text is in, everything else seems to work fine.

So as a workaround, I decided to start writing posts in the notes app on my phone to copy / paste into my site afterwards. While I was drafting this week’s post on my phone, I decided to change up the format this time, ditching the section headings and going with a more freeform post. Not sure if I’ll go back to the way I was doing it or if I’ll stick with freeform – I’ll see how I feel next week.

Signing off…
